Chapter 8

The trolls positioned in the back garden were becoming impatient. They grumbled to each other about how they had been given the most boring job. In the caves is where they wanted to be. That is where the action would take place. They had all left their posts and were now gathered not far from the back door. Full of bravado and safe in the knowledge that neither Graff nor the Master could hear them they spoke about how stupid they both were to expect Jacob to attack the house.

‘Does the Master honestly think the Viking would attack here? One particularly ugly troll said.

Being considered ugly in the world of trolls took some doing, but this troll did justify it. He was obesely fat with warts of all different colours over his face and hands. His lips were too large and covered in cracks. Yellow pus seeped out of those cracks and joined the pus from the warts to make a sort of permanent beard of pus crust. His teeth were green, which was something he could offer no explanation for. They had always been that colour and showed no signs of changing. His eyes were tiny and looked like they belonged on an infant.

When he spoke, everyone else stopped talking and stared at him silently. He always took this as a sign of respect. It was, in fact, a sign of disgust. Even other trolls found him repulsive. When you considered his spluttering voice it made him a mesmerising sight that you could not look away from. Every time he spoke his words were joined by the sound of his teeth clicking together and pus smacking off his oversized lips.

Perhaps if a different troll had been speaking at this point, the others would have noticed as the large dark shape flew over the hedge and landed silently. They were all facing away from the garden, and the only troll looking the correct way was so engrossed in his own opinions he never thought to keep an eye on what was going on just fifty feet away. If he had looked down the garden for even the briefest of glimpses, he would have seen the dragon staring directly at him.

‘And another thing, If Graff were here right now, I would tell him exactly what I think of his Master's plan. I would tell him where he could shove that pl…’ The ugly troll stopped talking as he finally saw the huge dragon charging towards them.

As if a spell had been broken the other trolls turned as soon as the ugly one stopped talking. The sight of the dragon bearing down on them caused some to scream and others to freeze. They barely had time to take out their weapons before the dragon was on them. A swoosh of its powerful tail sent four trolls flying through the air. One smashed through a window at the back of the house. This, in turn, alerted the trolls and goblins inside that an attack was underway.
